Steel fire protection piping is usually joined by welding, threading, flanging or grooved couplings. For pipe sizes from 2″ upwards, the real choice on most projects is between grooved couplings and welding. Here is how they compare.
A groove is cut or rolled near each pipe end. A ductile iron coupling with a rubber gasket is placed over both ends and tightened with two bolts; the coupling keys engage the grooves and lock the joint. Fittings such as elbows and tees have grooved ends, so a whole system can be assembled without welding.
Roll grooving presses the groove into the pipe without removing metal, so it suits standard and light-wall pipe. Cut grooving removes metal and is used on standard-wall and heavier pipe. MECH grooved fittings work with both, on pipe to ASME B36.10, ASTM A53 and ISO 4200.
For sprinkler and fire water systems, choose UL Listed / FM Approved couplings and fittings and check the pressure rating for the pipe size and wall thickness used.
