UL and FM Approvals: What They Mean and How to Verify Them

UL Listed versus FM Approved, why approvals are per model and size, and how to verify them in the official databases before supply.

Fire project specifications keep repeating: “products shall be UL Listed and FM Approved”. Yet a product is often accepted because its catalogue carries the approval logo, without checking that the model, size and pressure required are actually listed. This guide explains what each approval means and how to verify it yourself from the official sources.

Key points

  • UL and FM Approvals are independent bodies that test products and audit their manufacture.
  • An approval covers a specific model at specific sizes and pressures, not the company or its whole range.
  • Verification is done in the official databases: UL Product iQ and the FM Approval Guide.
  • MECH product tables show the approval for each size separately.

What does UL Listed mean?

It means samples of the product were tested to the relevant UL standard — such as UL 213 for grooved fittings or UL 262 for gate valves — and that UL follows up production with periodic factory visits. A listed product carries the UL mark and appears in the UL database under a file number, such as EX6624 shown for some MECH threaded fittings.

What does FM Approved mean?

FM Approvals is the certification body linked to the insurer FM Global. It tests products to its own approval standards, such as Class 1920 for grooved couplings and fittings, and lists approved products in its Approval Guide. Many major projects and insured facilities require FM alongside UL.

Steps to verify an approvalModel and sizeOfficial databaseMatchFrom the BOQUL Product iQ / FM GuidePressure, size, use
Verification in three steps: identify model and size, search the official database, and match pressure, size and use.

Why approvals are per size

Approval bodies test each size or size group, and a large size may be untested or tested at a lower pressure. That is why MECH tables show one size approved UL / FM / VdS / LPCB and another of the same model without approval. Example: the ZSJZYS water flow indicator is UL / FM approved up to 8″, while the 10″ size is not UL / FM listed.

Caution

A UL or FM logo on a catalogue cover does not prove that the model and size you buy are approved. The reference is the official database and the approval mark on the product itself.

Verification steps

  1. Identify the model, size and pressure required from the BOQ or specification.
  2. Search UL Product iQ by manufacturer name or file number and confirm the model and size are listed.
  3. Search the FM Approval Guide the same way if the specification requires FM.
  4. Match the approved working pressure and limits of use with the project requirements.
  5. Check the approval mark on the product on delivery.
  6. Include proof of approval in the submittal file for the consultant.

How Fu-Mech helps

MECH product pages show the approval for each size, and the certificates centre collects the certificates and their numbers. You can also build a submittal file with the data sheets and certificates for the products you select.

Frequently asked questions

Are UL and FM equivalent?

Both are recognised independent approvals, but each has its own standards and database. Some projects accept either; some require both. The project specification decides.

What is the difference between UL Listed and UL Recognized?

Listed means a complete product listed for end use; Recognized means a component used inside another product. Fire systems normally require Listed.

Are VdS and LPCB alternatives to UL and FM?

They are recognised European approval bodies and are called for in some specifications. Whether they are accepted as alternatives is up to the consultant and the project specification.
